Sunwing adds Roatan and La Ceiba
Package holiday company Sunwing Vacations has announced its newest destinations for winter 2009-10: La Ceiba and Roatan in Central America.
Roatan Island, the largest of the Caribbean’s Bay Islands, has long had a reputation as a haven for watersports enthusiasts, where scuba divers and snorkellers enjoy the crystal clear waters teeming with marine life off the second largest barrier reef in the world. After a day on one of the picture-perfect beaches or meeting the "underwater locals", the funky and lively bar scene in the West End beckons. It’s the perfect destination for those who want to leave their Blackberries and watches – and perhaps even shoes! – at home.
Sunwing will be featuring six hotels in Roatan, ranging from 3 to 4.5 stars and including the Henry Morgan Hotel and Beach Resort, one of the largest and most popular hotels on the island. Other options include the casual 26-room Turquoise Bay Dive and Beach Resort, the perfect choice for avid snorkelers and divers who want to “sleep in their fins”; and the Infinity Bay Spa and Beach Resort, the most upscale on Roatan. All hotels include all meals and drinks; some include a wide variety of sports as well.
Sunwing offers direct flights to Roatan Island commencing in December from Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
Perhaps less known than Roatan Island, but gaining a name as an ecotourist destination perfect for beach lovers, is La Ceiba. With a backdrop of the Pico Bonito (“beautiful peak”) National Park, the area around this medium-sized city features stunning beaches, many natural reserves, parks, beaches, and easy access by ferry to the Bay Islands – not to mention challenging river rafting opportunities. It’s a great destination for the active vacationer, with excursions ranging from the UNESCO world-heritage site Mayan Ruins at Copan to kayaking, canopy tours and hot springs all available.
Sunwing will feature three 4 star all-inclusives near La Ceiba: the hotel-style Palma Real Caribe Beach Resort; the Palma Real Villas (featuring 30 two bedroom villas complete with full kitchens); and the Villas Telamar, a combination of hotel rooms and villas, which were originally built for Chiquita Banana Company executives.
Sunwing offers direct fights to La Ceiba commencing in December from Toronto.
